BASF building SMR at Chinese MDI unit

According to reports by the US news agency “PetroChemical News” on 2 October 2017, BASF has started construction on a new steam methane reformer (SMR) at its methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) facility in Chongqing, China, to enhance the reliability of MDI production at the site.

The investment is expected to ensure the continuous improvement of operations over the long term, the company said. Cost of the project and a completion date were not disclosed.

BASF began the first production of MDI at the site in August 2015. At the time, the company said the plant had a production capacity of 400,000 t/y, which would gradually be ramped up in line with market demand.
