100th anniversary logo for the International Sleep Products AssociationUnit sales of mattresses and foundations grew a healthy 9.3% in February, compared with the same month of the prior year, according to the International Sleep Products Association’s February Bedding Barometer (paywall). The wholesale dollar value of those bedding units rose 8.3%, compared with February 2014, and the average unit selling price of mattresses and foundations sold in February decreased slightly, by 1.0%.

Year-to-date unit sales and their wholesale dollar value rose 8.6% and 10.2%, respectively, compared with the same two-month period of 2014. Year-to-date AUSP increased 1.5%.

Looking at trends for the previous three months, mattress industry data show that from December to February, units increased 10.5%, wholesale dollars grew 14.8%, and the AUSP rose 3.8%.

The Bedding Barometer reports U.S. sales activity (including Puerto Rico) for 13 U.S. mattress producers. The participating companies accounted for 70.1% of the mattress units shipped and 78.2% of the wholesale market revenue for mattresses sold in 2013. The experience of these participants as a group does not necessarily reflect those of the entire mattress manufacturing industry. Furthermore, comparisons of Bedding Barometer results for different time periods can be affected by a number of factors, including differences in the number of workdays and holiday promotions in a given month, weather conditions, non-reporting manufacturers entering or exiting the market and other variables.
