CertiPUR-US® Program Launches Beta Phase of New Certification for Molded Flexible Polyurethane Foam Used in Bedding and Upholstered Furniture
(Rochester Hills, Mich. – September 12, 2016) CertiPUR-US® is expanding its certification program for slabstock flexible polyurethane foam to include molded flexible polyurethane foam used in bedding and upholstered furniture.
Separate technical guidelines have been established for molded foam producers during the one-year beta phase which was recently launched. Participation in the beta program is limited to slabstock producers currently in the program, as well as a few molded foam producers who were invited to participate.
Until now, CertiPUR-US certification has not existed for molded foam products.
The technical guidelines for both certifications include standards for content, emissions and durability and require testing by independent, accredited laboratories.

To be CertiPUR-US-certified, molded and slabstock  polyurethane foams must be made without ozone depleters; PBDE, TDCPP, TCEP and certain other flame retardants; formaldehyde; mercury, lead and other heavy metals; prohibited phthalates regulated by the CPSC; and are low VOC emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).

“This natural extension of the CertiPUR-US program was driven by considerable demand from the industry to address consumer questions about the molded foam products in their homes,” said CertiPUR-US program Executive Director Mike Crowell.
The current slabstock CertiPUR-US program has 31 participating foam producers in the U.S. and other countries, and about 450 manufacturers, distributors, and retailers that are selling products containing certified foam and listed as participants in the consumer section of the CertiPUR-US website at www.certipur.us.
