CertiPUR-US® Program Officially Launches New Certification

for Molded Flexible Polyurethane Foam Used in Pillows, Bedding Products and Upholstered Furniture

(Rochester Hills, Mich.  – August 23, 2017) After a successful, year-long beta phase, the CertiPUR-US® program, has officially expanded its certification program for slabstock flexible polyurethane foam to include molded flexible polyurethane foam used in bedding products and upholstered furniture.

Until now, CertiPUR-US certification has not been available for molded foam products.

There are separate Technical Guidelines for slabstock and molded foams. The only difference in the criteria for certification is the sample size required for evaluation, and the packaging of the sample to be sent to the testing laboratories for analysis. Some molded foam producers may need to create a new mold to accommodate the proper sample size.

The Technical Guidelines for each of the certifications include standards for content, emissions and durability and require testing by independent, accredited laboratories.

To be CertiPUR-US® certified, molded and slabstock polyurethane foams must be made without ozone depleters; PBDE, TDCPP, TCEP (“Tris”), and certain other flame retardants; formaldehyde; mercury, lead and other heavy metals; prohibited phthalates regulated by the CPSC; and are low VOC emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).

“Molded foam products are often used for bedding, pillow and upholstered furniture applications,” said CertiPUR-US program Executive Director Mike Crowell. “It was a natural extension of our program to develop a certification for molded foam.”

The CertiPUR-US foam program has 43 participating foam producers in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, China, and Vietnam.

These six foam producers are now offering CertiPUR-US certified molded foam:

• Megafeat Bedding Co., Ltd.
• Shuibishen Home Textile Technology Co. Ltd.
• Sinomax
• Soft-Tex International, Inc.

More than 700 manufacturers, distributors, and retailers are selling products containing certified foam and listed as participants in the consumer section of the CertiPUR-US website at www.certipur.us.
