U.S. chemical manufacturer Huntsman declared force majeure Monday on its methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) supply from its Rozenburg plant, in the Netherlands, a company spokesperson told OPIS Tuesday.

“Huntsman declared force majeure, effective Monday, Aug. 5 , for the supply of MDI and MDI-based products manufactured at the facility,” the spokesperson confirmed to OPIS.

The producer was operating the MDI unit at reduced rates, “due to unforeseen circumstances…resulting from the declaration of force majeure by several of our Rotterdam cluster partners,” Huntsman said.

It is not yet clear how long the force majeure will remain in place.

The company operates two MDI units at the site near Rotterdam, which have a total capacity of 470,000 metric tons/year, according to data from Chemical Market Analytics, by OPIS, a Dow Jones company.

“We continue to work diligently to minimize the impact of this event, and we will restore normal operations as quickly and as safely as possible once our partners’ issues have been resolved,” the producer said.

The two MDI production units are a key part of Huntsman’s global chemical production network, used to manufacture various polyurethane products.
