LONDON (ICIS)–Global new passenger car sales across key auto producing regions rose by 4.73% in October year on year, ICIS analysis showed on Tuesday.

October increases came on the back of rises in the US, EU and EFTA (the European Free trade Area) and China.

Data have been aggregated from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), AutoData, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), and Associacao Nacional dos Fabricantes de Veiculos Automotores (ANFAVEA).

Year-to-date figures also saw an increase, rising by 1.3% in the first ten months of 2015 compared with the same period in 2014.

Nevertheless, stripping China out shows a fall of 1.73% in October year on year, and a fall of 0.43% year to date as declining sales in Japan and Brazil outweighed rises in the US and EU + EFTA. At the same time, growth in the EU and EFTA has begun to show signs of slowing, with new passenger car sales in the UK dropping for the first time in three years and seven months.

China measures car registrations as sales to dealerships rather than sales to end-user, skewing the underlying data.

The automotive industry is a major global consumer of petrochemicals which contribute more than a third of the raw material costs of an average vehicle. ICIS tracks the movement of petrochemical raw material costs in auto production both globally and regionally with the weighted ICIS Basket of Automotive Petrochemicals (IBAP).
