ITASCA, IL – Chemical distributor Fitz Chem-Nagase Group has appointed Tom Downing to a newly developed role as Director of New Supplier Development. In this role, Downing will evaluate new suppliers to identify strategic matches for Fitz Chem’s product portfolio, manage select Fitz Chem suppliers, and oversee management of proprietary Fitz Chem produced products.

Downing has served as Fitz Chem’s Director of Sales-North for the past three years. Prior to joining Fitz Chem, he had extensive experience in leadership roles in both manufacturing and distribution management. “Tom will play a critical role in Fitz Chem-Nagase Group’s strategy to expand our sales model in both geography and product portfolio width. His understanding of the distribution market and competitive manufacturing landscape make him a key asset in our approach to this strategy,” said Robert Milano, Fitz Chem-Nagase Group’s Director of Supplier Management.

Concurrent with this appointment, Fitz Chem announced the appointment of Ian Giloth to the position of Director of Sales-North, continuing the positive momentum of leadership and growth in industrial chemicals. Giloth recently served as Sr. Manager – Marketing & Sales, Base Chemicals, for Sasol Chemicals North America and before that was a Sr. Account Manager – Performance Urethane Polyols at Monument Chemical LLC. Prior to his chemical manufacturing career, he had an extensive background in distribution with Univar and Chemcentral, occupying several key sales management roles and culminating with his final position in business development, where he was responsible for key supplier negotiations and relationships.

“We are thrilled to have Ian onboard as the newest member of our leadership team,” said Al Bernhardt, Vice President of Industrial Chemicals. “His broad experience in the chemical industry in sales and supplier management coupled with his extensive background in distribution with Chemcentral and Univar, Ian is an excellent leadership fit for Fitz Chem-Nagase Group as we progress our specialty selling approach in the marketplace”.

Mol and thyssenkrupp: Laying of foundation stone for new polyol complex in Hungary

thyssenkrupp is building an integrated chemical complex in Hungary. The foundation stone for the polyether polyol production facility was laid on 27 September 2019 in Tiszaújváros. The oil and gas company Mol Group is investing a total of EUR 1.2 billion in the new plant complex. It is expected to be commissioned in 2021 and will produce around 200,000 t/y of polyols. The facility will produce polyether polyols using the HPPO process (propylene oxide from hydrogen peroxide) developed by thyssenkrupp and Evonik.

According to Mol Group, it will be the only company in Hungary and the entire Central and Eastern European region with an integrated value chain from crude oil extraction to the production of polyether polyols. The polyol project will provide long-term employment opportunity for 200 people, said the company.

“Today marks an important step for the transformation of the chemical industry in Hungary as well as for the cooperation between Mol and thyssenkrupp,” said Dr. Sami Pelkonen, CEO Chemical & Process Technologies at thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions. “With its Vision 2030, Mol is pursuing an ambitious growth agenda. We are proud and sustainably committed to support this vision and to contribute with our technologies and know-how to an innovative and sustainable chemical sector.”

“This investment project will make Mol Group one of the most important players in the region’s chemical industry, with Mol being the only Central and Eastern European company to control the entire value chain from crude oil extraction to polyol production,” said Zsolt Hernádi. “Once commissioned in 2021, the plant will further enhance the position of Tiszaújváros in the chemical industry, as the expertise and the new production infrastructure established here may attract additional investors to the area.”

Saip installs two insulation lines in the US

Saip

Italian machinery maker Saip has just installed two polyurethane sandwich panel lines in North America, according to Luca Ceresa, commercial manager, Saip.

Ceresa was talking on the fringes of the CPI meeting held here. He declined to name the clients but said one line was installed in Michigan, the other in South Carolina. ‘I think these are some of the most advanced lines in the US,’ he said.
‘There are some new solutions that are being used for the first time,’ he added.
Looking at the business for cold chain and commercial refrigeration systems in the US, he said: ‘people are positive , the market is growing year after year. This is our best year ever. This is thanks to support from our local agents.’

Rigid foam machines and fixtures in the cold chain market are advanced designs, he said. ‘This is because people want tailor made solutions, we are quite flexible about this,’ he said.
The US is a promising market, there is a big need for new technology, he added.
