3D Printed Urethane Tire

Linglong develops PU tire via 3D printing

YANTAI, China — Chinese tire manufacturer Linglong Group Co. Ltd. has collaborated with Beijing University of Chemical Technology to produce a polyurethane tire through 3D printing technology.

The company claims this is China’s first polyurethane tire that was made using this technology.

According to Linglong, the process uses a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) material that has lower heat and rolling resistance compared to traditional rubber tread.

The tire maker also said the tires are “green” products that use energy-saving, low-carbon materials.

The process uses TPU materials, which are said to have lower heat- and rolling-resistance compared to traditional rubber tread. Linglong said it is working with universities to develop new sources for tires including dandelions and graphene.

Linglong said it would “continue to promote technological progress and structural adjustment, to accelerate the development of green tire with high performance and quality.”

BASF Launches 3D Printing Venture

BASF recently announced the creation of a new company that will tap into the rising field of additive manufacturing.

On Sept. 1, BASF 3D Printing Solutions GmbH will begin operations as a fully owned subsidiary of BASF New Business GmbH. The company will be headquartered at BASF’s InnovationLab in Heidelberg, Germany. About 30 expert employees, mostly comprised of BASF’s internal team, will work at the new business.

This isn’t the chemical giant’s first foray into the world of 3D printing. Since 2015, BASF has been involved in several partnerships to exploit the emerging technology with HP, Laster Sinter Service, Prodways and more.

BASF’s new business will focus on system solutions and developing materials, components and 3D technology services. The company plans to collaborate with potential customers and academic research teams while engineering solutions for a range of applications. The industries the company will target include aerospace, automotive and consumer goods.

“The field of 3D printing for industrial applications is highly dynamic and still emerging. This means there is a need for agile, startup-like structures with interdisciplinary teams and quick decision-making processes,” Volker Hammes, the future managing director of the new company, explained.
